In late 2012, in the middle of completing her Honours degree in Publishing Studies, bestselling author of addiction memoir Smacked, Melinda Ferguson was offered the opportunity to create her publishing imprint MFBooks Joburg by her lecturers and founders of Jacana Media, Bridget Impey and Maggie Davey. Ferguson embraced the opportunity and soon had an impressive list including bestseller Drug Muled by Joanne Joseph and From Whiskey to Water by Sam Cowen. Since the birth of MFBooks, a burst of inspiring books have transformed the start up into one of South Africa’s most exciting and cutting edge imprints.
In 2016 MFBooks Joburg published the winner of the coveted Sunday Times Alan Paton Award for the groundbreaking Rape: A South African Nightmare by Dr Pumla Dineo Gqola. 2017 promises to be the best year yet with no less than ten titles including the much anticipated Being Chris Hani’s Daughter, a memoir written by Lindiwe Hani and Ferguson.
“I look for books that will transform both the writer and reader, books that shift.” – Melinda Ferguson
